There are three or four people I can practically see myself in this picture with. My mother, who maybe I meet on the joint holiday we take from our respective jobs. She loves Italy (that’s the backdrop in my head) and she loves her reds. We talk career for precisely two minutes before moving on to the more eurdite… like gastronomie, or art, until the third glass in reached after which it is who wore what and what they did next. There are so many words, so many hand gestures and yet one can do without all of that, because with mothers and daughters, you just know.
I see myself with my best friend. Suddenly this is New York (unlikely from the picture, but humour me), because Italy with its food and easy warm charm seems more like my mother, while New York with its manic energy, yellow taxis, Times Square momentousness seems like a trip to be with your friend. You talk, get lost in those streets, miss trains and never regret the wait. And after a long day, you get back to your room, sit at the balcony, ignoring the noise and concentrating on the bubbly as you decide, life is still as exciting as you though it would be.
And then one day, I’m in London with my sister. I sip Pimms, she her Apple Cider. Giggling over stories that are narrated by curved edge yellowing photographs and reveling in the bags of shopping that litter out hotel room which we really don’t want to clear up… to the victor belong the spoils.
As I stare at this picture then, I realise that these girl moments are what let us be the word surplus people we are, because she will be there with a glass in hand, a wicked smile in place, just waiting to hear about the shop (or cafe or guy or bitch) around the corner.
